Portugal Sample Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Lisbon
Driver will pick you up and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to relax and explore the historic center of Lisbon.
Day 2: Lisbon
Today, your licensed guide will meet you at your hotel and take you to visit the Castelo de São Jorge (St. George's Castle), where you'll also be treated to the most panoramic view in all of Lisbon, the Museo da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, one of the world's finest private art collections and a few of Lisbon's other top sites. Your guide will leave you at a typical Lisboan tavern for lunch. The afternoon is on your own. Tonight have dinner and a show at Adega Machado, one of the country's favorite Fado clubs.
Day 3: Lisbon
Today, your guide will pick you up and take you outside Lisbon to "glorious" Sintra, the single most beautiful town in all of Portugal (World Heritage Site), where you’ll do a walk through the typical historical center, accompanied by your guide. You will visit Pena National Palace, the most beautiful Romantic Palace in Portugal. The journey continues to Cape Roca (the westernmost point of continental Europe), passing through Colares, a route with a unique natural landscape. Next, head to Cascais, passing through Guincho, where you can admire the beaches and the beautiful Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, as well as the magnificent Atlantic Ocean. Visit the picturesque and charming town of Cascais, where you'll have a guided tour and walk through its center including lunch. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon to rest and relax.Day 4: Evora
Today, take a taxi to the car rental. Pick up your car and drive to Evora (1.5 hours). Submerse yourself in a sublime blend of Portuguese culture, history, wine, and gastronomy on this tour of the rustic Alentejo province. Explore the Roman legacy at Évora, a Unesco World Heritage Site. This is a wonderful, charming town. The wine made around the town of Evora comes from the famed Alentejo region of Portugal. Day 5: Evora wine tasting:
Today follow a wine-tasting itinerary including visits to Monsaraz, Reguengos, Redondo, Vila Viçosa, Borba, Estremoz and finally
back
to Evora. All these places are very beautiful and
some of them have very nice monuments, marble houses,
archs and streets, and also quaint restaurants, with authentic Portuguese
food.
Day 6: Obidos
Today, drive to Obidos (2 hours). Arrive in time for lunch. Explore this wonderful medieval town. Obidos was the traditional gift given by the King of Portugal to his wife. This tradition commenced in 1282 when Dom Dinis gave the town to his wife Dona Isabel.In those days, the sea came up to the walls of the castle but by the 15th Century the sea retreated and the land was cultivated. The town has changed little over the years and still has narrow cobbled stone streets and white washed houses with blue trim and flowered window boxes.
Day 7: Madeira
Today around 9:00 a.m., drive to the Lisbon airport and drop off the car. Fly to Madeira. Flight departs Lisbon at 11:20 p.m., arrives Madeira at 1:00 p.m. Pick up you car and drive to your B&B set among the vineyards. Explore along the way. Tonight, of course, try some good Madeira.
Day 8: Madeira
This is a day on your own to explore Madeira. Drive around the island taking time to sightsee. Take the cable car to the Monte. This modern cable car which brings you up to Monte is a 15-minute ride with an approximate 1,800-foot incline. The trip takes you up and over the old town of Funchal and the Ribeira de Joao Gomes valley, and deposits you in the charming town of Monte, featuring gorgeous views over the south coast of Madeira. We can also set up a half day boat trip/bird/dolphin watching/snorkeling trip, if you wish.
Day 9: Madeira
Day on your own to explore.Day 10: Fly Home
Today you'll drive to the airport, drop off your car and fly home.
